About us

Sankalpa Nrityayan started its journey from 7th September, 2004. Today, it is one of the premiere Odissi Dance Institutes in Kolkata. Here the learners are taught the basics of classical dance with utmost care, guiding their way to perfection. Along with dance, the institute emphasizes physical exercise which is very important to tone the body. Care is taken so that they get clear idea of different Taals and Raagas which form the pillar of dance. From the very beginning students are given lessons on the origin of Odissi Dance, they are told about the famous Odissi Dancers and their works, as well as the current scenario of classical dance in India and abroad. Gradually they are taught about the make-up, costume, stage craft and other necessary things intricately linked to Odissi Dance that makes a dancer complete.

About us

ARPANA is a dance academy and performing unit that constantly seeks to address the relevance of our Indian, traditional dance forms in a contemporary context. ARPAN aims to make possible, "space and time for each individual (adult or child) who loves dance and wants to grow through dance in a holistic and unique way." Rooted in the traditional dance forms of Bharatanatyam and Odissi, Ashwini constantly seeks to explore movement and allied art forms to bring in a richer depth to her understanding of dance. Trained in Bharatanatyam at a young age, Ashwini took up dancing as her vocation. She worked with Nritarutya, a Bangalore based contemporary dance company for over 6 years. She experimented with different dance forms and performed with the company on tours across India and the world. On her journey she discovered the dance form of Odissi suited her personality and interests the most; and underwent rigorous training in all aspects of Odissi for more than a decade. She also worked with Nrityagram for two years, imbibing the nuances of the style and the vast theory of Indian classical dance. Apart from Odissi and Bharatanatyam, she has been trained in martial art forms like Kalaripayattu and Aikido. She is a certified Yoga Instructor from SVYASA. She has worked with theatre and has been trained by Probir Guha of the Alternative Living Theatre, in Calcutta. Work with the development sector: Ashwini has been nominated to the CID:UNESCO, the International Council for Dance for her efforts in using dance to make a positive impact on society. She has had a long relationship with the development sector. She has trained and worked with different organizations teaching movement to diverse groups of people. She has also worked with street theatre movements across Jharkand and Orissa. She was invited to perform at We Can, a campaign to End Violence Against Women, organized in Sri Lanka by Oxfam GB.
