I know you're supposed to stay at the podium when speaking but I like to step away from it and walk around. It helps make me less tense. Is that OK sometimes?

Yes....it also helps the audience who otherwise can get a stiff neck looking at the same spot continuously

Hi Shreya! Yes it is absolutely ok to step away from the podium and talk. However, there are some caveats. Is it a formal presentation where the mike set up is only at the podium - in which case moving around will become difficult. Also, how much you move will depend on how far you are from the audience, if you are covering the screen etc. Walking around though is a very positive confident sign, however, a lot of walking can get distracting because the audience will be focused on your movement and not on what you are saying. So make sure, you are moving 1-2 steps at a time read less
