I am Ex-Senior Officer Technical Sales @ AkzoNobel India Ltd turned Fitness Instructor.
Started my career as Technical Executive in R&D at the above organisation and after few promotions and additional responsibilities of Sales & Technical Services over four years, I resigned from a well-paid job to venture out into Group/Personal Fitness Training.
All of this started while I was working with the above firm, because I was highly interested in doing something for my Soul also other than the pockets only, I used to train my colleagues On FOC basis at the office just to make them look fit rather than fat, I could understand their busy lifestyle because of which they couldn't go to the gym. But still, i would create a short & intense workout for them without any or minimum equipment & tell them that "the best investment to make is your body, construct it strongly because that is the place wherein you are living from first breath and will be living till last breath."
Hearing my sharp lines & inclination towards fitness or Body First Principle, because they have seen my transformation from skinny guy to the presentable person, my colleagues & higher officials motivated me to start something of my own which I like most and then I ended up with Fitness Certification from Reebok University, if you wish to give me an opportunity to serve you & prove my above lines, do let me know.

For your first part of the question, the answer is yes. The gym is just a place or facility to achieve or fulfil your fitness goals which don't have anything to do with age in most of the cases.

When it comes to fat loss, slow, steady cardiovascular activities like cycling, running, swimming or any other activity which demands you to intake more air/oxygen and your legs are moving will lead you to fat loss because these activities utilise fat/lipids as the primary source of energy. When it comes to diet make sure that you are balancing out your calorific intake, eat less junk/unsaturated fats, feed more on fibrous food, whole grains, veggies, fruits, little bit dairy for proper fat intake.  It is only for fat loss, muscle building and strengthening is another topic to talk about. Yes it is possible by doing bodyweight exercises, mild weight training & low intesity aerobics movement involving movements of hands
