Format > Cells > Font > check Superscript then type '2' which will appear as superscript Format > Cells > Font > uncheck Superscript

Use Superscipt optiion to write square in excel. Click small arrow icon below in the font group and check superscipt option in the checkbox

If you want to type 5 Square ( 5^2) in a cell. Type '52 in the cell -> Select the letter 2 alone -> Format -> Cells -> Fonts -> click on the check box Superscript.
