But in certain songs like nothing else matters eg. you can't use the pick (in intro) cos you need multiple notes on different strings so you LL have to learn playing from both. the purpose of playing guitar using either pick or hand (for acoustic) is to bring or create variations in sound. so depends on your ability which one you can use to variate sound differently.
