a standard guitar comes with six strings and if u r playing BASS guitar it can be either 4 or 5 strings. If we talked about maximum how many it can be...so max it can b of 18 strings. :)

Tutor

6 string guitar are most common and widely use for guitar playing. Same way 4 sting bass guitar are common with bass player. Very few bass player prefer 5 or 6 string bass too. Very rarely 7, 8 , 9, 18 and 24 string Harp and customized guitar also used by some pro.
