You can play the guitar with a pick, but you can't play many classical pieces with a pick. Most require more than one string being played simultaneously. If you are really dead set against learning classical finger techniques, then yeah, you should probably get a steel string. Ask your teacher if he's willing to teach you songs/styles that you can play with a pick. Maybe you could at least explore the idea of using a combination of pick and fingers. You won't find any true classical players (or flamenco style either) doing it, but there are plenty of amazing guitarists who have done it successfully in rock, country, folk, jazz, etc. It's up to you. But I will say there is a definite difference in tone between pick and fingers. Fingers have a warmer, more variable "attack" on the string. Picks are easier for playing fast, single string passages, but it's really incredible the speed that can be generated by a real master player using their nails. If your teacher plays flamenco and classical, he can probably show you some excellent examples to illustrate this... By the way, nylon strings aren't *that* rough- give it a try. The callusus on your finger tips will build up quickly, it doesn't really hurt that much. You should also know that standard steel strings will be even rougher on your fingers. Remember, you have a left hand (or fretting hand), too...in fact, this is the hand that will probably hurt more in the early stages of learning. read less
