You learn when you are comfortable.

You can start with simple strumming... But you'll have to learn chords .. start with the easy ones like A-minor, c-major etc... They are not difficult... Everything needs practice,, so does guitar playing.

There are many type of styles of playing guitar, when you hold more than two notes at a time it becomes a chord. Chords are very useful in songs, you can only learn leading in guitar but its also necessary to learn chords for making yourself skillfull.
