The Analytical writing section give emphasis on critical thinking and analytical writing skills. In the analytical writing section, each essay receives a score from two trained readers using a six-point holistic scale. Scores are given on the basis of the quality of the essay. If the score given by the two trained readers differs by more than one point on the scale, a third GRE reader sorts the discrepancy. Otherwise, the two scores are average. The final scores on the two essays are then averaged and rounded to the nearest half-point interval on the 06 score scale. A single score is reported for the Analytical Writing measure. The Anaytical Writing section is the one non-native speakers of English detest most. The intent of ETS in administering this test is to get students to do the unpleasant task first.

Hi! To put it very simply, the analytical writing section looks at how logical you are and how balanced and neutral your thought process is. In the Issue Task, Candidates who exhibit a position that takes into account multiple points of view on the topic that has been presented usually receive a high score. The Argument Task is slightly different in the sense that, it expects you to identify any weaknesses in the argument that has been presented and also to present a reasoning as to why you feel they are weaknesses. Hope this helps! read less
