Has anyone got into MS programme abroad using their GATE score? Are they preferred over GRE or they are just an eligibility criteria and score doesn't matter?

No there is no such exam but in few cases Subject GRE test is recommended.

Many B-Schools have started accepting the GRE scores. And the GRE new format (after August 2011) tests you on several measures which were found only in GMAT. One thing is, the Critical Reasoning Section. Now in the GRE, you will have questions involving critical reasoning, though these are not as difficult as those found in the GMAT. Also there is more verbal reasoning and less of vocabulary in the new format GRE, which is another measure tested in the GMAT.
