There is no defined limit as when to buy one as a beginner. If you have the passion and wealth to buy one, go for it.

There is no timeline. But you could take it slow. Once the student is confident in playing or able to demonstrate the necessary skills that would be the right time. I'd check on my students if they could commit time at home for practice.
