Right age to start music classes for children

All parents enjoy it when they see their kids learn and grow in different multiple fields. They want to see their children do well in school as well as in co-curricular activities. We also try our best to give our kids everything that we were deprived of and hope that they get all the opportunities in life that we did not.

Unlike before, Parents in India today are very conscious of their kids' overall development and are ready to take that extra burden to expose them to variety of areas. Dance and music lessons often come as first choice for parents to offer it to their kids.

Learning music could be quite vital for your child. Many researches have shown that learning music greatly improve your kids performance in academics as well as in other areas. These studies have further shown that learning music can make your kids smarter. While learning a song, dance step or a musical instrument your child experiences the unique integration of body and mind. This integration helps children perform other activities as well like reading, writing and math. A research by M..I.N.D. Institute showed that music can improve spatial-temporal reasoning, a neurological process needed to understand mathematics.

Music Classes for Children

So what should be right age for you to introduce music to your children? Well, you should not wait for formal classes to begin for introducing children to music. Just as you read books and stories to your very young children, you should sing to them. It does not matter if you consider yourself a good singer or not. You should dance with them on nursery rhythms, teach them singing games like if you are happy and you know it and also share with them the music that you like. Exposing them to Videos, books, DVDs, TV for the music doesn t hurt, but there is nothing better than personally engaging with your children to sing and dance.

If you re worried about your child s talent to learn music, don t. All children can benefit from learning music, they don t have to be next Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi or Bryan Adams to enjoy and benefit from the music. As mentioned earlier, learning music immensely helps in other activities, specially reading and mathematics.

If you still want to wait to experience his/her natural aptitude before starting music lessons, following questions may give you a good guidance:

  • Does you child often sings alone? If yes, is the tune accurate?
  • Does your child suggests or insists on singing and/or dancing beyond his/her designated playing hour?
  • When your child sings along with recordings/DVDs/TV, does he/she tries to find the right pitches and sing in rhythm?
  • Does he/she learn to sing a song or play any instrument quicker than the other kids in class?
  • Does he/she remember songs long after he heard someone singing?

If you re planning to send your children for formal music lessons, you need to wait for them to turn at least three to four years. Some music tuition classes may be ready to take your kids at even two and half years, but it may be just be excuse for you to have some own time.

While looking for formal classes for your kids, there are few things you absolutely need to keep it in mind:

  • Finding the right instrument -- This would be the first thing for you to choose if you re planning to send your kid to instrumental music classes. Age, personality and musical preference of your child, Size and portability of the instrument and Cost are some of the important factors while deciding the right instrument for your child.
  • Next comes the right teacher /trainer- The music teacher should not be just good at music, but also should also know how to handle young kids and that requires experience. Its always better to read the reviews about the trainer or have some references before approaching them.
  • You would have to consider several other factors like distance, commute, timing, fees before you can take a final call for sending your kid.

So wait no longer and give your kids the gift of music, they will cherish for life.
