Because ballet is much more fluid than tap or hip hop or jazz it generally is more aesthetically pleasing for it to be more complex than simply “on beat.” Ballet music is divided into phrases of 8 counts. Each count corresponds to one measure of the music. (8 measures = 1 phrase) Each count is also divided into "sub-counts," the number of which is determined by the time signature. (E.g. In 3/4 time, we count "1, (2, 3,) 2, (2, 3,) 3, (2, 3,) ... 8, (2, 3)" for each phrase.) By and large, we only count in 3's or 2's, as most of our music is in 2/4, 3/4, or 4/4 time (4/4 is counted like a 2/4). However, I have danced to music set in 6/8, 12/8, 5/4, and 2/2. In those cases, we follow the general rules explained in the previous paragraph. read less
