Its ion, [Ag(NH3)2]+ can oxidize many compounds such as aldehydes and a layer of pure 'Ag' is deposited on the glass surface. In the process Ag+ ions are reduced to Ag metal. METHOD OF SILVERING OF MIRROR (1) Clear the glass sheet to remove any stain or oily materials. Cleaning is done with ammonia solution. (2) Prepare aqueous solution of AgNO3. (3) Dilute this solution with ammonium hydroxide solution slowly until brown ppt of silver oxide is redissolved. AgNO3 + NH4OH è AgOH + NH4NO3 (white ppt.) this is chemical test used to detect aldehyde in the molecule.this is also known as Tollen's test this can distinguished aldehyde from ketone .as you see in the following reaction the aldehyde react with tollen's reagent and get oxidised to form carboxylic acid and this is not possible in the case the ketone as you have to break C - C bond and also ketone are less reactive than aldehyde. 2 [Ag(NH3)2]+ + RCHO + H2O → 2 Ag(s) + 4 NH3 + RCO2H + 2 H+ the oxidation state of C in aldehyde is +1 and in carboxylic acid is +3 as there is increased in oxidation state so aldehyde is getting oxidised to form the carboxylic acid. read less
