The movement started in April 2006 was the second popular movement for democracy in Nepal. It aimed at restoring democracy and thus capturing the control over the government from the king.
The movement started as King Gyanendra, in February 2005, dismissed the then Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba of Nepali Congress (Democratic) and dissolved the popularly elected Parliament.
All the major political parties in the Parliament formed a Seven , Party Alliance (SPA) and called for a four-days strike in Kathmandu.
The protest soon became an indefinite strike in which Maoists and various other organisations joined. People defied curfew and took to the streets.
The number of protesters reached between 3 to 5 lakh on 21st April 2006 and they served an ultimatum to the king.
The king was forced to admit their demands. Girija Prasad Koirala became the new Prime Minister of the interim government
