SEZ is based on Chinese model.The purpose of an SEZ is to encourage exports and to attract investments (FDI and Indian)Now, let us look at how a special economic zone serves the purpose.Cost of production comes down in an SEZ : SEZs are considered as entities outside the customs territory i.e., they are deemed as foreign territories for the purpose of trade, duties and tariffs. They are free from plethora of rules and regulations such as exemption from labour laws. At the same time they can import raw material and capital goods without duty. So, the cost of production is less and thus SEZs are vehicles of export growth. TILL NOW INDIA HAS 436 SEZ, karnataka,maharasthra,telengana,andhra has highest.. Hope it helps... read less
