Hi This is vennkateshh. I teach carnatic vocal , violin, keyboard and guitar (carnatic) and violin, piano, guitar and drums (western). Students appear for exams from our academy for both carnatic and western classical music. Online classes are available.

In Hindustani Classical Music we generally try to hit the straight notes too...but in Carnatic Music the initial training begins with the sliding of notes(meend).

Get the feel of the song right. One good way is to first recite the lyrics in the correct meter and pronounce as if you're talking to someone. Do this 10-15 times, then it's just about singing as if you are conveying the same message. For instance, "tu hi re tere bina mai kaise jiyu" can be expressed in multiple ways.
