First and foremost its a relative quantity (ie ratio), Its the ratio of Volume of Voids(Vv) to Volume of Solids(Vs) (not total volume), Void Ratio (e) ranges from 0 to infinity Case 1: e=0 In a very high dense soil or say rock, volume of voids(Vv) will be approx 1% whereas volume of solid particles(Vs)...

Here assume bucket as total volume (V), water as voids volume (Vv), soil particles as solids volume (Vs) ... (e=Vv/Vs) in this case Vs = 0(approx); Vv=99% (approx) .. hence e=infinity read less

Soil is not a dense material. Each soil particles have different angular, different shape. The formation of soil will have more voids in the volumes. When the volume of voids is high the soil wont ne dense and strong. When the volume of voids is less, soil have good dense and strong condition. This condition...

When the volume of voids is high the soil wont ne dense and strong. When the volume of voids is less, soil have good dense and strong condition. This condition defined as void ratio. The void ratio is nothing but the ratio of the volume of voids to the volume of solids. When u compact the soil the voids will be reduce and void ratio is less. You can do the simple practical test to find the void ratio. read less

It is basically a volume ratio used as a basic determinant for engineering properties of aggregates and soil. It is basically ratio of the volume of voids to the volume of solids in a given sample. It signifies the amount of voids per unit of solids i.e. aggregates.
