First and foremost its a relative quantity (ie ratio), Its the ratio of Volume of Voids(Vv) to Volume of Solids(Vs) (not total volume), Void Ratio (e) ranges from 0 to infinity Case 1: e=0 In a very high dense soil or say rock, volume of voids(Vv) will be approx 1% whereas volume of solid particles(Vs) will be 99% , hence e=.01/.99 which is almost 0 Case 2 : e=infinity In a very very loose soil, say a spoon of soil in a water bucket. Here assume bucket as total volume (V), water as voids volume (Vv), soil particles as solids volume (Vs) ... (e=Vv/Vs) in this case Vs = 0(approx); Vv=99% (approx) .. hence e=infinity read less
