Find something small to work on that has a good ecosystem of people building things with it, and use that to solve a problem or scratch an itch that you have. Good systems include the Arduino family (and its many derivatives), and also the set of tiny Linux boards like the Raspberry Pi or Beaglebone... ...more
Find something small to work on that has a good ecosystem of people building things with it, and use that to solve a problem or scratch an itch that you have. Good systems include the Arduino family (and its many derivatives), and also the set of tiny Linux boards like the Raspberry Pi or Beaglebone Black. You can start with something cheap but functional and go from there. As to programming "embedded systems" there are lots of language options. The challenges you will face include making sure the runtime doesn't fill up your memory space, and making sure that if you're using a high level language with garbage collection that the GC step doesn't throw the timing off for your system. That said you have lots of options (within your problem constraints) including something like node.js (Javascript).
