Energy required to remove an electron from a neutral atom (in gaseous state) is called ionisation potential. 

Meaning: Higher IP → atom holds electrons tightly.

Energy change when an atom gains an electron (forms an anion) is called electron affinity 

Meaning:Higher (more negative) EA → atom strongly attracts electrons.
