Pakhawaj has a single barrel shaped wooden body. I have seen Pakhawaj made of clay and metal- but those are rare. It is placed horizontally on floor/on the lap and played. For Tabla, the bass side, too, has the black iron based sahi.

Tabla is an invention fathered by the Pakhavaj. The tal-s too are the same; e.g. Pakhavaj has a 12 beat cycle, so does Tabla except that nomenclature differs - Tabla terms it Ektāl and Pakhavaj, Chautāl. Tabla is an invention fathered by the Pakhavaj. The tal-s too are the same; e.g. Pakhavaj has a 12 beat cycle, so does Tabla except that nomenclature differs - Tabla terms it Ektāl and Pakhavaj, Chautāl. So, pretty much much of the tāl system is alike. However, having said that please remember that the movement of the tāl-s is very different. For instance take the 16-beat cycle (Teentāl): Tabla : DHA DHIN DHIN DHA | DHA DHIN DHIN DHA | DHA TIN TIN TA | TA DHIN DHIN DHA | Pakhāvaj: DHA DHETE DHETE DHA TA DHETE DHETE DHA KAT TITA TITA TA TITA KATA GADI GANA The movement (chalan) is completely different. To answer an oft-asked question: is it possible to play a composition (in sixteen beats) created for tabla on Pakhāvaj? No. However, there are compositions created in Pakhāvaj that depart from the above and resemble the Tabla-style bol-s. read less

Where is the best place to buy Tabla in Bengaluru
A good place to check out is the Balepet area near the City railway station. There are a few small but very authentic tabla makers there. If you know how to recognize a quality tabla when you see one, this is the place to go.
