STRESSED AND UNSTRESSED WORDS IN A SENTENCE

While speaking, sometimes we give more emphasis to certain words in a sentence or say them louder than others, with extra force. They are called stressed words. The stress is used to make specific points clear.

Examples:

  1. She wants to see our house.
  2. SHE wants to see our house.
  3. She wants to see our HOUSE.
  4. She WANTS to see our house.

 

  1. Where did you keep the book?
  2. WHERE did you keep the book?
  3. Where did YOU keep the book?
  4. Where did you keep the BOOK?

 

  1. Is he your uncle?
  2. Is HE your uncle?
  3. Is he YOUR uncle?
  4. Is he your UNCLE?

 

  1. I like to eat apples.
  2. I like to eat apples.
  3. I LIKE to eat apples.
  4. I like to eat APPLES.

 

  1. Have they replied to your letter?
  2. HAVE they replied to your letter?
  3. Have THEY replied to your letter?
  4. Have they replied to YOUR letter?
