Hi, Let’s talk about what are the challenges one face while learning the English language and possible solutions. 1. Being a non-native English speaker we have lots of mother tongue influence. 2. We tend to think in our native language and communicate in English. If grammar is different, than that of our native language and English, we will make lots of grammatical mistakes. 3. Most of the time we are with the people who prefer to speak in our native language, hence we are not well versed with different words. And as we don’t speak on different subjects we have a very limited vocabulary. 4. If someone writes in our native language and make some grammatical mistake, we will immediately find it out. Because we are used to it (Imagine 24 hrs of the day or whatever time the mind is active, we are constantly interacting in our native language). But when we are writing in English we may not know where we are going wrong. 5. We are terrified of speaking English; please note, even if your grammar is excellent, you have good word-power, until you don’t practice speaking you will never be fluent in English. 6. There could also be issues with pace, initially, we tend to speak fast, due to which we may not utter few words completely. We need to slow down our pace. Now let’s talk about the solution: 1. Write: writing not only improves your handwriting but also make you think in English. 2. Speak: We need to speak in English enough every day so that our speech and our words comes as polish as native an English speaker. 3. Listen: So that when we are making grammatical mistakes we can notice them. I really don’t know how this works? But I have seen it working with many people. If you listen carefully, you will be able to figure out what is wrong. 4. Speak: Most important part of English Speaking. If you don’t practice speaking English no matter how good you are with the language you will make mistakes. You have to overcome your fear only by speaking. I know people who have studied in English medium, has very good writing skill but fail to speak. Not because they don’t know English but they are either shy or afraid. 5. Read poems, tongue twister aloud, this will slow down your pace and you will be forced to utter each word completely. 6. Write on a different subject each day so that you will learn new words. 7. Download dictionary on your mobile, so that every time you come across any word, you can check its meaning and usage. 8. Try to find words with similar meanings (synonyms). Try using different words so that your mind will store them for future reference. 9. Last but not least, join my class. I run small initiative where we make people speak a lot. They practice speaking English over the phone or skype. I also maintain a blog, where I write about The English Language. You can check it out. I think I have covered all the points, in case you would like to know more please do get in touch with me. Remember English language or any other language is just a mode of communication. Don’t be afraid of it. There are many people in this world who do not know/speak English, but are doing very well in their life, so chill. Look at it as a challenge and not as a problem. I am 100% sure anyone and everyone can learn any language if they have a sincere desire and put some efforts. Hope this helps. Regards, Rajani read less
