Nowadays having a good command over English helps us to reach our goals a little faster, English being the Lingua Franca (A language used for communication between speakers of different languages, often containing elements of several languages), the official language in India and also widely spoken language all over the world.
The understanding of the Language is very easy when compared to the other Indian Languages, specially in a country like India where its one of the main subjects in the curriculum from the primary classes and around twelve percent population in India speaks English.
To understand the language all the four pillars: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking have to be thoroughly practised.
What has to be done to enhance your understanding is that you need to surround yourself with English speaking friends, an English speaking environment has a great effect on your speaking abilities.
Learn new words on a daily basis, write it down and revise, learn aids to vocabulary like idioms, phrasal verbs, proverbs, collocations and tongue twisters which are also a great way to develop your colloquial language. Practice crosswords too, these are a fun way to remember more.
Reading short stories, articles of interest, news items also help in enhancing the language.
Retention is a problem as words, words and words are what have to be learnt so to help in remembering things form a group of like minded friends discuss on day to day matters, imitate when you are stuck regarding accents, learn few sentences that would make talking easier, join an institute of English Learning.
And last but not the least don't be tongue tied talk, talk as you can, start now. There is no perfect time to start.
