Head Wobble "Yes! Yes!" and "No! No!" The Indian head wobble (or bobble) is the source of much confusion and wonderment amongst foreigners, especially the first time one is confronted with it. It looks like a cross between a nod and shake, but does it mean yes? Or does it mean no? Or even maybe? Similar to how the various regions in India have different customs and languages, the way in which heads are wobbled also varies. You'll find that the further South you go in India, the more prevalent the head wobble becomes. What is your comment on this unique Gesticulation?

Surely, language is a medium of expression but it is enriched by the socio-cultural aspects and that includes gesticulation, which is a non verbal communicative expression. Head wobble, is a unique gesticulation and it conveys various meaning depending on the context. Therefore, the contextual meaning of gesticulation is important for effective communication. There is no specific rule for a particular gesticulation and we should respect individuality, be culture sensitive and be curious to understand the various perspectives to be able to communicate effectively. read less

Yes, I completely agree. This particular habit both bemuses and confounds; and at times is annoying too.

For instance In 1992, George Bush visited Australia and, from the window of his limousine, held up his index and middle fingers in the “V” shape, a la Winston Churchill. With the palm facing outward, this V means victory in England, or peace in North America. Too bad Bush gestured with his palm facing inward, the nonverbal equivalent of “up yours.” It was heavily condemned. Hence, untill one is talking to ones own ethnic groups, he must be very careful with using body gestures. read less

Head wobble is a kind of a body language. However, the person should understand whether his body language is being understood or else he must be more vocal.
