Answer of such kind of question always be diplomatic for all QA's. It's my personal opinion, automation is equally important as manual in current trends. Yes, important not necessary, now value of automation is key of more success in software industries. so go for it and make them right.

I am into automation testing since last 7+ yrs & i know the value & demand of it, beside demand, it pays you high package as well! Go for Automation Testing at any cost if you are not aware of! Simple answer: If you want to be safe, secure & recession-free then Automation Testing is mandatory to learn because now-a-days nobody is interested in ONLY manual testing! Of course, automation testing is not the replacement of manual testing, but still the market needs multiple-skilled resources who has different skills like automation testing using QTP/Selenium, Load/Performance testing using Loadrunner/Jmeter etc., Web service testing, ETL testing, Database testing etc. So, consider Automation Testing as a mandatory option and don't even ignore to keep yourself safe & secure for future jobs! read less
