Indian classical music has roots in spirituality. Ragas have specific times of day or seasons associated with them. Western classical music has no such them. Harmony and melody are important in western classical music.

Taking about classical music, I believe one of the major difference between indian and western classical lies in the harmony. Indian classical music makes use of rhythm and melody only. You must have noticed that indian classical musicians play along with tanpura or harmonium but there are no chord progressions, whereas in western classical music, you get to learn the melody, rhythm and the harmony. Although, when you consider indian fusion, then you can get to listen to harmony too. For ex: Listen to the band "Shakti" which consisted of legends like Zakir Hussain, John McLaughlin, Ramnad Raghavan, etc. Later, the group started touring with Shankar Mahadevan. Now you aren't just limited to just 1 raga or scale. This video starts with an alaap by Shankar Mahadevan along interesting chord changes by John McLaughlin. Also, I don't agree with the above written answer by Ms. Subbulakshmi. She is trying to compare indian classical and western music (rock, pop, etc instead of classical). If you think that way, lets take indian music aka Bollywood (non classical), don't you get beats predominantly and awful lyrics with poor arranging and composing? And don't forget you have opera in western classical music, which also makes use of emotional lyrics. Musicality is a very subjective topic. There are tons of genres all over the world. You don't generalize them. I hope this helped you :) read less
