India has an age long heritage of traditional crafts. Nothing in the world matches the handmade textiles and crafts of India . All the more, it becomes a matter of regret that most of our traditional crafts are not thriving but just surviving in the global market.
Spite of this over the last few years the exports of handicrafts from India are showing an upward trend and it can go beyond measurable boundaries provided we can produce world-class design with accepted quality at reasonable price while retaining the traditional features.
Keeping this in mind it is our objective to impart skills to individuals, which enable them to appreciate and understand the craft, at the same time come out with successful products designed to suit the current needs of the customer. The need is to understand - the craft itself, the traditional features of the craft, the modifications possible, production techniques, product development, costing, pricing, packaging, the market trends, marketing, customer profiles and market segmentation.
It is not humanly possible for any one person to be an expert on all these aspects - the only way is to get a taste - a direction. Keeping this in mind - Vaitarna- has been planning and conducting various trainings, giving basic understanding and/or hands-on experiences. These participatory courses train individuals to learn very systematically the fundamentals of any skill from technically trained expert faculty supported by master craftsperson.
