About me

Throughout my career, I have always believed in what my high school teacher in Physics used to quote what Einstein said: “Education is that which remains, when one forgets what he has learnt at school.” These words always lie at the bottom of every activity that I have taken up so far and would take up here after. However, when I quote these words, I don’t intend to determine that we forget what we have learnt at school. Later, I learnt the true meaning of education, when I read William Blake, who said: “How can a bird that is born for joy Sit in a cage and sing? How can a child when fears annoy But droop his tender wing And forget his youthful spring?” and cemented my beliefs as a teacher. I believe that each learner is a Nature’s true manifestation of the divine wisdom, and so has the inward radiance that can enlighten the whole world. The only pre-requisite is that the learner should be able to realize his/her inner potential, which can be made possible only by an able teacher. Hence the teaching- learning environs should be secure, caring, and stimulating not only to the learners but also to the teacher. Learners’ emotional, intellectual, physical, and social needs when nurtured with much care can yield such fruits, the taste of which provides a great stimulus to the learners first and to the society in the long run. With this faith in my nerves, I begin every session in the learner-centered and interactive pedagogy (LCIP) system. For a language teacher like me LCIP system gives the very impetus to work with. Initially when I chose the profession of teaching – a hereditary profession of our family- I have visualized myself not just as a teacher, but in three other roles: a guide, an idealist and an arouser of curiosity. As a teacher for more than a decade and a half, I have realized that an able teacher is a mixture of all the three above roles. As a guide, I never compel my learners to believe me as their primary source of information, but rather a provider of access to information. As an idealist, apart from setting myself as an example to them, I lay before my learners the accepted social norms and show them how to uphold them; for, I believe learners have greater respect for their teachers, their peers, and the imparted lessons presented when they feel comfortable and sure of what is expected of them. In setting fair and consistent rules initially and stating the importance of every activity, learners are shown respect for their presence and time. In turn they learn to respect themselves, others, and their environment. Finally, as a curiosity riser, I believe in developing a curriculum around learners’ interests because it fosters intrinsic motivation and stimulates their passion to learn, which in turn manifests in future discoveries: in numerous instances could I discover new ideas in the presence of my learners! Thus I discovered that an able teacher is quite different from a mere educationist. It is true that teaching provides me with an opportunity for continual learning and growth, but I have realized that I shouldn’t be a mere knowledge-filler. It is important for students not only to receive a solid education, but also to work with someone who is aware of and sensitive to, their individual needs. I am such a person and will always try my best to discharge my latent talent towards the achievement of this goal. I never believe in the existence of competition of any type, but in collaborative work. Also, I keep trying to model my own love of learning to my learners. Although I had been a writer of books, a columnist, a musician and a painter, I love above all to teach, to learn in the presence of my learners and to conglomerate my experiences with their innocence: the very essence of my life. Case-based teaching along with such lively activities as group discussions, classroom presentations, and debating is what I choose to stimulate intellectual camaraderie, argumentation, and cooperative problem solving, thereby laying the groundwork for their life-long collaborative practice. Y experience as an instructor has precipitated my belief that the learners’ latent or dormant apprehensions are subdued when they are in groups and each activity becomes a conflagration of multisided creativity, the warmth of which enhances their performance and the radiance of which can inspire others too. Consequently, once their apprehensions die away, I wonder when they are creative, laugh when they are jocular, sympathize when they are at dismay, exemplify when they are at their wit’s end and rectify when they err, thus uniting my world with theirs. This unification has made me more sociable than one can anticipate from an expatriate instructor and stood upto my employers’ expectations: to exist harmoniously and to execute my duties effectively. These measures together with a touch nearer to perfection have consolidated my image only as a teacher: I can’t but imagine myself as a teacher. What I believe till my last breath is that I am born only for teaching. This, I am confident, is the crux of my educational philosophy.

About me

I began teaching writing to help students sustain their love for reading and writing. King said, “If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all else: read a lot and write a lot.” If you do not read, you cannot write. What started as a pilot project at the Gear Innovative International School has today moved to several different schools (Oak Ridge International, Amaatra Academy, Jyoti Nivas College). I help students discover their love for writing in a way that academic writing cannot. The writing program helps student writers experiment, be imaginative and ambitious, as well as reflect on their practice of writing. They have the opportunity to experiment with various genres and eventually come up with a final portfolio fit for publication. The process has been immensely helpful to students in discovering their own voice as writers. It is therefore, suitable for students who wish to build confidence, sensitivity and critical understanding of their own work and the work of others. It not only helps them hone their creativity in writing, but also helps them reassess their command over the English language. You can write to me here: sharoon.sunny (at) gmail (dot) (com)
