I can give you an example here, suppose you want to Vlookup very value of Empno , if the Department is not blank, where department is column A, and emono is in Column B

Then you want want the write the statement as below:

If(A2!="",Vlookup(B2,Tablereferencetolookup,5,0),"NoDepartmentForEmployee")

You can use it in both ways...in IF, you can use vLookup, or in vLookup, you can call an IF function, can you be more specific about your problem so that exact solution can be provided?
