Interview Skills: Maintaining Eye Contact

Sangeeta Pattanaik

Maintaining eye contact when addressing a large gathering or facing an Interview.

When you are speaking to a large audience, it may not be possible for you to establish eye contact with everyone in the room. So, how do you give the perception to everyone in the room that you are talking to them?

You can divide the audience into logical sections/groups. When delivering your speech, look at one person in each section/group. The others who are sitting around that person would also get the feeling that you are talking to them. You can even pick a person who gives you more comfort feeling, in a group. Make sure to give each section of the room, equal time and energy. Also, do not neglect the people in the back!

So true. I try and follow a different methodology. I try to identify people who are responsive to my comments/questions and try to build a rapport with them through interaction that I might have. What eventually starts happening is they in return start getting a sense of belongingness with the speaker. 1. Start identifying those them and start connecting with them through q&a etc. 2. Try to connect with them even after the speech/talk if possible. In interviews what you could also look at doing is asking for an informal feedback, what went well and what could have been improved. That helps a lot. - Jogesh
