Groovy is almost a superset of Java, and most Groovy/Grails books will assume you already know Java. "Thinking in Java" is a fine book for learning Java. There are only two reasonably complete books about Grails: Grails in Action The Definitive Guide to Grails Both are a couple of years old, and are already quite a few releases behind. The official Grails reference manual is really the only source of up-to-date Grails doucmentation, and is of a much higher standard than most open source project documentation read less
