International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a standardized open entrance exam that aims to test the English proficiency of candidates. Among English language tests conducted globally, IELTS reserves an important position.

Importance of IELTS Exam

The IELTS test score is considered a mandate or ‘good to have’ specially for those in plan to migrate to English speaking countries. There are two versions of the IELTS exam – IELTS General exam and IELTS Academic exam.

A single complete session of IELTS exam lasts for about 2 hours and 44 minutes. The time division for the four sections of IELTS exam is -

Difference between IELTS General test and IELTS Academic test

As the name suggests this format focuses on the general survival skills needed at workplace or training. So this exam is for candidates who are going abroad for a training, secondary education or work related programs. This is mandatory for people migrating to Australia, Canada and New Zealand. This is for candidates interested in pursuing education in Institutions of Higher and Further Education. This score is considered for admissions in undergraduate or post graduate courses.

1). Score Range of  IELTS Exam
The score range of IELTS exam is between band-0 to band-9. Band-0 implies the test was never taken while band-9 certifies IELTS candidate as an expert user of English language.

Each section of IELTS exam is marked separately. The average score of four sections of IELTS exams makes up one’s final IELTS result.

3). Qualifying Marks in IELTS Exam
There is no qualifying or pass mark set for IELTS exam. All IELTS test takers are issued a Test Report Form. However colleges and professional institutes may set cut off for IELTS score during admission procedure.

4). Validity of score in IELTS exam
The validity of IELTS score is 2 years from date of test taken.

5). Rules to get IELTS score
Candidates receive IELTS score within 13-days from when the test is taken. Candidates will need their passport or ID number (the same number used while registering for IELTS) and candidate number.

To register for the IELTS exam, candidates need to follow these steps:

  3. The IELTS registration process requires a valid identity and passport number of the applicant. Same documents are to be carried along with the student on the IELTS test day.

IELTS Computer Based Test

Some of IELTS test centers across the globe are being now made ideal for CB IELTS, selected on the basis of certain technical and administrative requirements. Though this is just being introduced now, but the number of computer based test centers are expected to grow over time in order to meet the needs to IELTS aspirants and test score users across the world. From the initial launch, feedback will be taken by IELTS partners and thereafter arrangements will be made for computer based IELTS test.

CB IELTS now only extends to Academic module and is soon to be launched for the General version of the IELTS exam.

In CB-IELTS test, the Listening and Reading tests taken by IELTS students are marked by computer. The CB IELTS Writing test are marked by qualified examiners exactly alike the paper version of the test. Human marking in IELTS Writing section guarantees accuracy, validity and authenticity. In CB-IELTS, the Speaking test is not taken electronically . Its conducted physically face to fact.

Coming to scoring pattern, alike paper based IELTS exam, this one is marked on a nine band scale.

Those applying for CB IELTS are expected to receive test score within two weeks of taking the test. The Test Report Form of CB-IELTS will look the same, irrespective of the version of IELTS exam a student takes up.
