GRE = Graduate Record Examination is a standardized test conducted by the Educational TEsting Service ( ETS ) in the USA as an aid for universities and colleges to evaluate the candidates applying to a graduate school ( post-graduate courses ) in the USA.

Usually, an undergraduate student writes the GRE in his / her final year of the Bachelor's degree. However, one could write it in the year previous to that so that the scores are in early in the final year and one can apply early ( especially to obtain financial aid the deadline is earlier ). Also, if the scores are not high enough, you have time to take the exam again in your final year.

If your understanding of physics upto B.Sc. level is good, and you have been used to questions and problems from books like Resnick & Halliday or Berkeley Physics Course or Feynman's lectures, you just need 2 to 4 weeks to practise with sample GRE physics tests.

Depending on the lack of above, it could easily take at least 6 months or even a year, if you are targeting 95+ percentile.
