When comparing lead vs rhythm guitar, an easy way to think of it is that rhythm players are primarily focused on chords while lead guitarists are focused on riffs and solos. A lead guitarist's playing also echoes some of the vocal parts of the song, bringing the melody to the forefront.

Only you are in best position to decide. Decide on the basis of strength. The stronger hand should be playing and other hand should be holding frets.

How can I start learning guitar on my own?
You definitely need a teacher because the all the stuff on the internet is not correct and as a beginner you will not be able to differentiate between the correct and wrong ways of doing certain things.
