Start with acoustic. For a beginner needs to understand the basics of guitar. In electric you have to also learn how to handle the amplified sound. I recommend buy electric after minimum 6 month of practice with acoustic.

How did the guitar become such a popular instrument?
Guitars are reasonably portable and relatively inexpensive. Following the invention of the pickup they became easy to amplify so as to fill a venue with sound, and relatively easy to record.
