It's not only about chennai, its just a matter of budget. Some branded instruments(4000-6000) produced better sound with lower price, some india products with same amount doesn't have the quality sounding. Visiting the store is best option and good quality sounding guitar can be hard and recognize easily...

A decent imported acoustic guitar(please don't buy any Indian brands like Givson, Grason etc) costs between 4–5k(INR). Go for brands like Granada, Ashton, Pluto, Havana, Clayton, GB&A etc. If you can increase your budget to 7–9k you get very good brands like Cort, Yamaha, Epiphone, Fender...

Well, to be a versatile musician, you need to try a hand at all forms. But then play what makes you comfortable. Like if you see slash, he's a rock guitarist but then he's played blues with bb king as well. I hope this helps
