You cannot say "es gaben". In present tense it is es gibt. In past tense it is es gab. This is verb conjugation. It is very basic step in learning German.

I have not come across using 'es gaben'. In both cases ' There was ' & "There were" we use 'Es gab' whether it is plural or singular.
Comments

No "es gaben" is totally wrong , The right form is es gibt always.
