When I first moved to Germany I was a little scared. Germans have the fame of being squared and cold people. I have been here 4 months and the more I get to know them the more I am grateful for their principles and morals. I lived 8 yrs in NY city and coming from Latin America I was submerged into the capitalist, superficial culture they have. I remember on several ocations when going back home from parties and clubs we would find things people forgot on the train like Wallets or a purse . My friends will go though it to check if there was a number to call to return it but on ocation they will take the cash and drop the wallet on a mail box. They mail will return the wallet. So, this is New York, you did something and you gained something. This was normal. Germany is different. It's whole culture is based on thrust and moral principles, which I am so grateful for. Here I have found cell phones and what I do is go to the manager of the restaurant or cafe that I am in and explain i found it. My brother has been living here for 5 yrs now and a few weeks ago we found a wallet. Some one dropped it at a cafe and after checking it there were roughly over €2,000.00 inside, we didn't really check exactly. My brother is a barista at this cafe so he took it to his manager and told him that someone had dropped it and there was a lot of money inside. At that moment I felt like the most proud sister. This is exactly what I would have done. He said to me that a few months ago he had lost his wallet riding a bike through Berlin. In his wallet he had his house key with his phone number in case he lost it. He said he had a lot of money in there and that a lady was walking down the street and found it. She gave him a call and gave it back to him with everything inside. He even has a 6mnth transportation pass on his wallet. Everything was there and he was so grateful. This was his way of paying it forward. As i said I am the most proud sister. Germans may seem cold and squared at the beginning, but once you gain the people's trust you get to a different level where you are considered family, Not just a friend. They are Warm honest people and they choose whom to be warm and inviting with. I believe this to be the most important Value they have. So, you have to work for it but once you cross over you got a honest person in your life who is invaluable. This doesn't change the fact that they will tell you always the truth and expect you to do the same. But unlike most of the people in all different cultures that i have been around before; if they say they will do something they definitelly will and they expect the same In Return from you. Their Honesty is their most valuable asset. I have learned so much and I am proud to say I love it the people, the culture and the beauty of their infrastructures And cities. Their history has made them particularly tolerant and the more and more I get to know the way they are the more I like it. It's hard not speaking German fluently but every person i have encountered and asked for help have gone out of theit way to help, even with signs and their little English as they Say. read less
