Gauge factor = (delta R/ R)/ Strain, Basic principle of operation of operation of semiconductor strain gauge is the piezoresistive effect . This effect is the basic cause of high changes of resistance on strained. so its gauge factor is high. Other hand in mettalic strain gauge, the cause of change of resistance when strained, is only change in shape of metal so its more low compare than semiconductor.
