GATE 2016: Eligibility criteria

GATE is an all-India entrance exam designed to test a candidate’s understanding of different undergraduate subjects in Engineering and Science. GATE score is used to select students for admission in various post-graduate education programs e.g. Master of Engineering, Master of Technology and Doctor of Philosophy, in Indian higher education institutes, with financial support from MHRD and various government agencies.

If you are thinking to apply for GATE 2016 exam, please go through the eligibility requirements first.

1. B.E./B.Tech./B.Pharm. – A candidate should have completed a bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or Diploma in Engineering/Technology. Students who are in final year of these programs can also apply. Please remember, year of qualification cannot be later than 2016.
2. B.Arch. -- A candidate who have completed or in their final year of B.Arch exam, are eligible to apply for the exam. Please note, year of qualification cannot be later than 2016.
3. B.Sc. (Research)/B.S. -- Aspirant must hold a bachelor’s degree in Science. It can be a Post-diploma or at least 4 years after XII Standard. Those who are in their 4^th year are also eligible to apply. Please note, year of qualification cannot be later than 2016.
4. M.Sc./M.A./MCA or equivalent -- A student must hold a master’s degree in Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications. Candidates in their final year can also apply. Please note, year of qualification cannot be later than 2016.
5. Int. M.E./M.Tech (Post-B.Sc.) – A candidate must have completed Post-B.Sc Integrated Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology (Four year program). Candidates in their 2^nd, 3^rd, or 4^th year are also eligible to apply. Please note, year of qualification cannot be later than 2018.
6. Int. M.E./M.Tech or Dual Degree (after Diploma or 10+2) -- A candidate should have completed Integrated Master’s degree program or Dual Degree program in Engineering/Technology (Five year program). Students in their 4^th or 5^th year are also eligible to apply. In any case, year of qualification cannot be later than 2017.
7. Int. M.Sc/Int. B.S.-M.S. -- A candidate must be an Integrated M.Sc or Five year integrated B.S.-M.S. program. Students who are in their final year are also eligible to apply. Please note, year of qualification cannot be later than 2016.
8. Professional Society Examinations (equivalent to B.E./B.Tech/B.Arch.) -- A candidate must have completed their B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch. or equivalent examinations, of Professional Societies, recognized by MHRD/UPSC/AICTE (e.g. AMIE by Institution of Engineers-India, AMICE by the Institute of Civil Engineers-India). Students who have completed section A or equivalent of such professional courses, are also eligible to apply.

Few things to note, while applying for GATE exam

a)      If a GATE applicant has already completed or pursuing a higher degree that the mentioned degrees above can select the relevant minimum required qualifying degree while filling the application form.

b)      If a candidate has already passed one of the qualifying exams mentioned in 2015 or earlier, he/she must submit the certificate/course completion certificate/ professional certificate/membership certificate issued by the institute or society.

c)       If a candidate is to complete any of the mentioned qualifying exams in 2016 or later, he/she has to submit a certificate from Principal or a copy of marks card for section A of AMIE.

d)      When a candidate have to submit a certificate from their college Principal, they need to get beforehand and upload the certificate along with the application form.

e)      In case of a candidate, who have appeared any of the qualifying exams mentioned above with a backlog or arrears, should submit any one of the following:

–          Submit a copy of any one of the marks sheets of the final year

Or

–          Need to obtain a declaration from their Principal along with the signature and seal beforehand and upload the same during the online submission of the application form
