Ask a Question
When an element has 1, 2 or 3 electrons in the valance shell (last shell), the electron gives the electron, gets a positive charge, and makes an ionic bond.
When an element has 5,6,7 electrons in the valence shell, they tend to take the required electron(s) to complete the valence shell, get a negative charge and make an ionic bond.
But, when an element has 4 electrons in a shell-like valence carbon, it is confused; what to do - take 4 electrons or give 4 electrons?
Then such elements start sharing. They neither give nor take any electron. They simply share the 4 electrons with some other elements. This sharing of electrons is known as covalent bonding.
Covalent bonds are helpful for carbon because by making covalent bonds, it can join with lots of elements and the compounds so formed are big in number. So we have to study them separately in organic chemistry.
