Because our use of the internet (shopping, social media) has allowed companies to collect immense amounts of data on us - our buying habits, our hobbies, who our friends are, where we live, our political views. This data is valuable to marketing folks, politicians, social scientists, etc.

Because of it is helping human in many ways like automating tasks... detailed analysis of situations and understanding of data... one more thing it became big deal because of availability of data and data is a asset which helps businesses to generate revenue by understanding the patterns from data
