I would highly recommend you to go through Machine learning/Data Science courses in Udemy/Coursera/edx. These sites can be your starting point and if struck in understanding the concepts, you can approach people who are in this domain. Paying high for a DS course is useless when you have other options....

Non technical background is not an hindrance. Its just depends on our interest and learning capability. read less

If a person is from non technical background, he/she can contribute from domain perspective. Please assess your domain skills and evaluate if you can contribute from data scientist perspective. It has been observed that deep learning algos needs deep domain inputs.
