It depends upon the type of company and product we are talking about. In today tech-enabled markets, companies differentiate themselves by providing high-tech solutions which sometimes is backed by Machine Learning and in such companies Data Scientist is more valuable. But keep in mind it’s the product which data scientist is building using programing, statistics and mathematics. And numbers of such companies are few and often rely on top quality coders + mathematics + statisticians. Alternate view is that almost all companies want to move from gut based decisions to data driven decisions thus deploy analysis into decisions. Now a day they want to deploy predictive decisions and thus there is huge demand for data scientist in such companies. Since they are into non-tech product thus they value Salesman aka product as important concern than an operational decisions backed by data science.Thus in such companies it will take more time to value data scientist more than salesman.
