On the bottom because the floor is slippery and tape provides grip Around the ankle to keep them on (if you are referring to hard shoes then they tend to slip off, especially certain brands. For style. At the championship levels and at major competitions, almost every competitor will have hard and soft shoes taped because it gives a sharpness to the shoe. I’m not sure why it’s such a popular thing, but it keeps the shoes on! read less
