For kids, its better you start with some classical form of dance. Once the child is in good form of classical learning you can opt for various styles of dance.

They both follow 4/4 time. They both have follow a 'quick-quick-slow' step pattern. Cumbia music on average is slower than Salsa music. Salsa music has more layers of harmony and sounds more complex.
