Velocity is the rate of change of displacement i.e Displacement/time. Vector quantity Speed is the rate of change of distance i.e Distance/time. Scalar quantity Let me give a quick example to understand the concept. Say a person in walking in his community with 1m/s in the east direction, 1 m/s in the north direction, 1m/s in west direction and 1m/s in south direction. Since velocity is a vector quantity and there is a change in direction velocity varies but the speed is not varying being a scalar quantity. Happy learning!!! read less

A railway carriage of mass 9000 kg moving with a speed of 36 kmph collides with stationary carriage of the same mass. After the collision, the carriages get coupled and moved together. What is their common speed after collision? What type of collision is this?
The objects move together after the collision and have a common velocity. So it's a perfectly inelastic collision. To find the velocity we use Law of conservation of linear momentum. Given velocity v1=...

The Earth moving round the Sun in a circular orbit is acted upon by a force, and hence work must be done on the Earth by this force. Do you agree with this statement?
The force on earth jn circular trajectory is gravity, acting radially inward...the direction of motion is tangential.....as u knw work is dot product of force and dx, the work done is zero.
