Reflection is the change in direction of a wavefront at an interface between two different media so that the wavefront returns into the medium from which it originated.

Reflection of light is either specular (mirror-like) or diffuse (retaining the energy, but losing the image) depending on the nature of the interface. ... Reflection also occurs at the surface of transparent media, such as water or glass.

Reflection is when light bounces off an object. If the surface is smooth and shiny, like glass, water or polished metal, the light will reflect at the same angle as it hit the surface. This is called specular reflection. Diffuse reflection is when light hits an object and reflects in lots of different directions. This happens when the surface is rough. Most of the things we see are because light from a source has reflected off it. read less

Reflection off metals (like a mirror) happens because electrons in the metal happen to be able to match the frequency of the light, so it bounces off. It can also happen because of a change in refractive index.
Comments

Due to surface tendency to not allow light pass through it partly reflects and partly refracts depending on surface refractive index.

"REFLECTION" is a phenomenon which we have been experiencing daily. So, it is REAL. For the answer to the question,"How it Occurs', various THEORIES proposed on the nature of LIGHT, namely, 1,Newtons Corpuscular Theory 2. Huygens' Wave Theory. 3. Particle- wave (Dual) theory, and 4. Electromagnetic Theory. I think The postulates of above Theories and their applications are out of the Scope of IX - X class Syllabus. Hence, I ll try to explain it in simple way, as follows. When a ray of light, travelling in a medium, hits a surface OR a boundary, separating that medium from a less denser medium and in a situation where that surface, OR that Boundary does not allow the light ray to travel beyond them, then the light ray REBOUNDS (Reflects) back ( Of course, by obeying certain rules, Called Laws of Reflection). read less

Reflection can happen for a couple reasons.Reflection off metals (like a mirror) happens because electrons in the metal happen to be able to match the frequency of the light, so it bounces off. It can also happen because of a change in refractive index.

when incident ray travels through same medium on a surface gets reflected in the same medium making angle of incidence = angle of reflection then this phenomenon is known as reflection of light.in short we can say bouncing back of incident rays in the same medium is known as reflection of light
