# How many physical dimensions do we have?

Expert Faculty of Physics with Experience of 9 Years. Teaching 11,12,NEET,GUJCET,JEE Courses

In everyday life, we inhabit a space of three dimensions. but Generally, there are 4 dimensions (x,y,z:t) 3 axis and 4th is time. Mathematically there is N dimensions.

There are three dimensions, and one a time that also taken as a reference one.

There are seven physical quantities in Physics, namely: - Length - Mass - Time - Current - Temperature - Luminous intensity - Amount of substance

IITJEE Mains and Advanced PHYSICS 8 years experience.

Three dimensions (better to call three coordinates) are there to locate a point in space which can be physically perceived by a human.

We know or talk about 2D, 3D, 4D. But we can extend it to ND also, but that would be hypothetical, i.e, we can imagine for nD also.

Physics major at IIT-J researching in theoretical particle physics.

We have 3 "physical" dimensions. The 4th dimension we consider in relativity is time, which constitutes the understanding of the spacetime continuum. There is also a branch of cosmology that believe gravity to be the 5th dimension.

There are seven physical quantities in Physics, namely:

- Length

- Mass

- Time

- Current

- Temperature

- Luminous intensity

- Amount of substance

This is still controversial but a curious one must know there is a belief that there exist approximately 11 physical dimensions. Reply back if you are really interested in the names of those dimensions.

Teaching the subject with basics

3 physical dimensions are there.

This is a very fundamental question that you have asked, and quite simply, we don't definitively know. General Relativity gives us a 3+1 classical field theory, where there are 3 dimensions of space and 1 dimension of time(x,y,z-direction, and time). Superstring theory, on the other hand, gives us a 10+1 quantum gravity theory with ten dimensions of space and one dimension of time. The dimensions of space other than x, y, and z dimensions are 'compact' dimensions.

A simple way to think of a compact dimension is to think about looking at a far off traffic light. It appears two dimensional when you're far away, but as you get closer and closer, you see that it is 3 dimensional. Similarly, these compact dimensions are so tiny that they are not possible to be detected by today's experiments, and I am hoping that they do find them in the near future.

amplitude is the maximum +ve or -ve dispacement of a wave while frequency is the no of oscillations made y the wave in 1 sec. amplitude governs the loudness while frequency governs the pitch or shrillness of a sound .
